Why the West rules - for now

5 stars

Advised by a friend some years ago, it took me quite some time to get through this giant book, but it was totally worth it.

This book explores the possible reasons that made our world look like it is right now and gives a clear and interesting explanation on why the West rules, disregarding the early lock-in theory in favor of geographic influence and climate changes.

It's a wonderful read that will take you from 9000 BC to the present day step by step, explaining the ebbs and flows of history and the evolution of our societies throughout the ages. It taught me quite a lot and made me reframe how I saw the world and history, giving me a macro view instead of the history we are often taught of "great men".

If you have a knack for History, I recommend this book a hundred times as it will …

Truly interesting how we know so little of our past but also how history big events keep repeating.

« we might draw a tentative conclusion from this. that when the four horsemen of the apocalypse-climate change, fam-ine, state failure, and migration ride together, and especially when a fifth horseman of disease joins them, disruptions can turn into col-lapses, sometimes even driving social development down.»

Gripping and frightening

5 stars

Following the spread of a virus that makes animal meat deahtly to humans, society turns to produce "special meat", humans engineered to be eaten. Tender is the Flesh takes you to the frightening daily life of the "meat hunter" of a processing plant, charged with contracts, meat quality etc. The story starts slow but becomes more and more frightening as the pages go and you're unable to let it go until the very end. It left me a deep mark and brought me quite a lot of things to think about.
