Not what I expected; much more interesting. Keeps expanding into new planes of plot, symbolism, etc. I got this bc it was an influence on one of my favorite novels, The Combinations by Louis Armand, and I definitely see a lot of ideas pulled from here. Will read more Meyrink soon.
I simply admit it is not a book for me. Some might appreciate the deep psychological study, but I saw only the ravings of the madman which I had no particular desire to delve into. Especially the blurred line between the actual events and the narrator being insane creates the impression of lack of the fair play.
Also, the narrator clearly hates the people surrounding him (with 3 exceptions) and sees nothing good in them, and himself as so very much above them all that he can't even comprehend their life.
