“I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.”

Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root—its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. Better than its immediate predecessor, but again didn't quite rise to the heights of the first book in this series; this one didn't quite do the Sherlock "this-is-how-i-know-the-brilliant-thing" explanation as well as the first book. Slotting Thrawn into the "Rogue One" story as an ancillary character was brilliant, though.

Clever as the first, but also more labyrinthine. Plus, though the story is cogent enough on its own, it seems to rely on yet another book I haven't read, not simply the first in this series, as a prerequisite for understanding where a character comes from and an event which is referenced several times. Got to be a slog at points, and Vader's inner monologue felt a bit too petulant in places. Still, the interplay between Vader and Thrawn, not to mention the depth added to Padme's character, make this one well worth the read.
