The story alternates between 800AD and the present day, on the fictional island of Findnar in Scotland. In the present, Freya Dane, a PhD student in archaeology, inherits an island from her father and gradually unncovers the Viking, Pictish and Christian past of the area. In 800AD, the story of Signy(a Pict) and Magni (a Viking) is told blending into the present through the archaeological discoveries.
