R S Sharma gives an excellent account of the origin of Shudras and how it matured as a varna in the ancient system. Even though Sharma is constrained by the material available to him, he does put forward a largely convincing theory. I hope the next generation of historians takes this research further to include more archeological and epigraphical evidence.
