In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belasco's parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. Unnoticed by those around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his family -- like thousands of other Japanese Americans -- are declared enemies and forcibly relocated to internment camps run by the United States government. Fluffy 20th century novel

4 stars

As I become older, I apparently care more for fluff, and this story has plenty. it's a family saga, of Alma Belasco who fled from Poland to San Francisco in 1939, and fell in love with the son of the Japanese gardener of the family. Wrapped around Alma's story we have the story of her caretaker Irina in Alma's later years at a nursing home.

I greatly enjoyed this but can see how it's not for everyone. It's a bit Pilcher-y.
