It's good. It's really good. Standouts are Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream, Rattlesnakes, and The Answer Man. The Dreamers would make a pretty sweet movie, too.

Not my favorite Clive Barker collection, but it's worth reading if you're a fan. The version I read has the titular novella, plus four extra short stories. Interestingly, two of the stories in this book were later adapted and directed by Barker- Cabal as Nightbreed and The Last Illusion as Lord of Illusions.

Nicholas Meyer: The Adventure of the Peculiar Protocols (Paperback, Minotaur Books)

I stumbled across this at the dollar store and was delighted, as I'd only known about The West End Horror and The Seven Percent Solution. And this one might be the best yet. Meyer really understands the characters of Holmes and Watson. Great stuff. Doyle would definitely nod his approval.

Mitch Albom: The time keeper (2015, Hachette Books)

After being punished for trying to measure God's greatest gift, Father Time returns to Earth …

Sunday school ass book. Hints of a worthwhile theme wrapped up in trite, puerile writing. ABC Afterschool Special level storytelling. And that horseshit, anti-suicide saccharine tripe that your life belongs to everyone else.  It's a Wonderful Life earns it. This does not.

Stephen R. Donaldson: The second chronicles of Thomas Covenant (1980, Ballantine, Del Rey)

As interesting and frustrating as the main character. I'm not sure I have the stamina to go back to the Land for four more books. I wish it well, and hope things will turn out better this time.

Eric LaRocca: Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke And Other Misfortunes (Paperback, Titan Books, Titan Books Limited)

This motherfucker loves dashes. And also their own writing, which is pretty shit. Plus, the Melville reference is completely off, has LaRocca even read Moby Dick? Very much needs a few more rewrites or an editor.

Erich Maria Remarque: All Quiet on the Western Front (1982, Ballantine Books)

This edition is in Hebrew. Youthful, enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have …

I read the Wheen translation. I'm gonna give it some time, and then I'll give the Murdoch translation a go. But holy cow, this is such an important book and should be required reading everywhere.

War is fucked, and we send out children to die so old men can profit.

Herman Melville: Moby-Dick (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) (Barnes & Noble Classics) (Paperback, 2003, Barnes & Noble Classics)

"Command the murderous chalices! Drink ye harpooners! Drink and swear, ye men that man the …

That was a hell of a thing. A lot funnier than I thought it would be, especially at the beginning.

Patrick Robinson: Nimitz (Paperback, Albin Michel)

Right-wing pile of shit. Lots of crying about LIBERALS, lots of jerking off about how only MANLY MAN REPUBLICANS support ARE TROOPS. There's a bit where the Republican president, who is regularly idolized, and called a 'great man,' cries and shits in his diaper about those weak Democrats. This is an actual quote:

<blockquote>"The worst thing," the President interrupted, " the very worst thing that could happen to you guys would be for me to be driven from this office in the aftermath of this disaster. You would get a Democratic President, a Democratic Congress, and possibly a Democratic Senate. And they would have a great time dismantling the Navy, banning nuclear weapons, cutting out our shipbuilding programs, and above all ending the building of aircraft carriers for the foreseeable future. <b>They would then take all of that money and do what they always do- give it away to the …

Stephen King: The Tommyknockers (1987, G.P. Putnam's Sons)

From the Flap:

Late last night and the night before,

Tommyknockers, Tommyknockers, knocking …

It's not that bad, actually. Very long and meandering, but, think about it. The dude was a drug addled alcoholic mess and he still managed to write something of this quality. That's impressive.
