Fantastic historical fiction about a daring rescue of a scientist in Auschwitz whose research could turn the tide of the war. I sympathized with these characters, and found the story engaging at every stage.
A mention for the focus on Auschwitz itself: Gross did a phenomenal job taking you inside the camp, and making it as real and terrifying as any description I've read. It's the little details - the smells he describes, the quiet moments when nothing is happening, the bits of dialog between prisoners - that I felt as if I was there, sharing their terror.
Rather than a sideshow, this ability to vividly draw the reader in reinforced the heroism of the main character, the sacrifices of each person he touched... and made the entire story a far more engrossing tale than I expected.

It's hard to use the word enjoy when it comes to such a dark subject... but this was a masterfully told tale, and an important one too. Very glad I read it.
