While I've enjoyed most of Mieville's long fiction that I've read, this collection forced me to confront my short story biases and confirmed that I really prefer to have a story with - if not a neat end - then at least a conclusion. Something that indicates what the story was 'for', other than just indicating the author can come up with a weird idea.
And Mieville comes up with some truly weird ideas in this collection, like the card game with cards that are not part of the standard deck appearing out of nowhere, or the walking oil rigs invading the landscape under an ancient compulsion, or the archaeology of absences. I can take vignettes peppered through a collection of pieces that you might call more traditional stories, but this many unresolved (and unresolvable) stories in a single collection just get a little wearing and frustrating.
