I do quite enjoy the Watch novels I've read thus far, those being [b:Guards! Guards!|64216|Guards! Guards! I get my fix of good characters, interesting plot, clever humor, intentionally painful jokes, and everybody goes home happy.
What astounded me in light of this novel's pitch-perfect rendition of the Islamophobic, anti-Arab sentiment of the second Gulf War was its publication date: 1997. Which means Sir Terry drew this picture of really gross racism not from that specific toxic manifestation, but rather from the universal human experience. Good for art, bad for us, depressing to contemplate.
