Review of 'The narrow road to the deep north' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
'Enjoyable' isn't probably a word I'd use for this book. The war scenes are harrowing and graphic, but very effectively written. It also neatly avoids lionising the main protagonist by acknowledging his darker side and shortfallings. The post war scenes seemed less effective by comparison, but still for the most part necessary although the plot overall relies on quite a number of coincidences.
