Once you get past the very beginning (the heroine's family being more horrific than any monster featured within these pages), this book is one mostly uninterrupted steeplechase all the way to the end. There are a couple of new fully-realized characters introduced to us, but most of the antagonists are strictly of the shadowy bad-guy type. The tidbits of background, both personal and historical, to Alexia's preternatural state are intriguing, and I expect the author to explicate these fully in the remaining volumes of the series.
