memorysnow reviewed Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky
Review of 'Suite Française' on 'Goodreads'
3 stars
This book is not defined by what it is, but what it could have been: intended to be a novel in five parts, [a:Irène Némirovsky|22493|Irène Némirovsky|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1295709462p2/22493.jpg] only roughly finished the first two before being imprisoned in Auschwitz, where she ultimately perished before finishing the entire suite. Her writing is beautiful and insightful, but without the benefit of editing and completion of the story, the book is tedious, overflowing with superfluous characters and a lack of movement, especially in the first part. Part two redeems the story somewhat, earning the book a tentative three stars from me, but I admit I was glad when I finally reached the end. Not sure I'd recommend this book--perhaps it would be more rewarding to seek Némirovsky's other work instead.
