Troubling and Gripping

My mother had Flowers in the Attic and many other V.C. Andrews books on her shelves when I was growing up and got new books every year. Unlike all the speculative fiction books on my father's shelves, I never cracked the covers of these books, though the covers were fascinating to me. I had a good sense of the book's reputation before starting to read it last month. There are so many traumas, abuses, and deeply unsettling elements in this novel, and I'm not sure I could recommend it to someone who wasn't braced for and comfortable with all of that. It's a troubling story with plenty of complications and twists to make it gripping.

I nearly quit my reread of this old book. The language is so dated and I was sure I wouldn't enjoy it at all. The regular uses of "golly" and "for" this and that were a bit annoying but by the time the kids were locked in the attic a while, I was hooked again, just like I was as a teenager.

Yes, this old-ish lady bought the sequel, [b:Petals on the Wind|226709|Petals on the Wind (Dollanganger, #2)|V.C. I can't remember if I read past book three all those years ago, and I won't commit to reading past book two now, but I suppose some stories are truly timeless. What's not to love about a well-done evil mother revenge story?

--------------------------SPOILERS-----------------------------

This book was a difficult read. Maybe I should have picked a bit more upbeat book. Even though the book was a little depressing I'm glad I read it. The book is about 4 children - Chris, Cathy and the twins Carrie and Cory - whose father has just passed away and they have to move back to their mothers parents house with their mother. Their grandparents are very rich. So for the sake of the money that the mother would inherit from her parents she allows the children's grandmother (who is a religious fanatic and thinks that the children are the devil's spawn) to hide them away in the attic.

I've read a couple of reviews on the book where the mother has been criticized a lot along with the granny. I'm not saying the mother was not …
