For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art-and he is the city's most accomplished artist. For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly - and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint. But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics - and cultivate a flair for death.

Loved this book. There were enough plot twists that even I was surprised at times, and that takes a lot for cynical me. Grin. Rereading this in 2023, since I've read Lightbringer. Before I started this re-read, I told a friend that, while it was amazing, it wasn't as amazing as Lightbringer. Brilliant over-all, but less for Brent Weeks than the other series. Now, after rereading the first book, I revise that opinion. While I remembered liking the book, I didn't remember much about it. The plot twists in this series are Brent Weeks at his best. I fell in love with the series all over again.
