This is a difficult book to read. It is basically the entire history of Middle Earth and it is dry. It of course concludes with the history (but not the details) of the battle of the One Ring as written in Lord of the Rings. If you really want to know about the beginning of Middle Earth and some of the major folklore that is informed in the books the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings then this will let you know.

It just reads as some of the driest prose I've read for a while. It's not Tolkiens fault it seems to be told from someone of that time and not someone of today.
