Thick. The kind of thickness where every word means five things and the story is told with this detachment, as if it's a third-hand description of events. Monumentous events are described laconically while he spends pages detailing scenery. Flashbacks within flashbacks weave together. But it's also gripping; which makes sense. It's not a story so much as a spell.
