The action is thus switched back to a fortnight or so before the girl's death, with the result that the reader is given a puzzle new to detective fiction: not, spot the criminal, but, spot the future victim.
It was one of those, I’m happy I read it cases I often get when I read classics. Perfectly adequate, but wouldn’t recommend unless you’re interested in the original whosadunnin, or just love golden age mysteries for their own merit.
The forward of course addresses the problematic issues respectfully while allowing the work to exist as a record of the time it was written, which I appreciate the tact and thoughtfulness.
