"Former Posadas County Sheriff Bill Gastner, now a New Mexico Livestock Inspector, is enjoying a day on Herb Torrance's ranch--soaking in the sun as he counts a small herd of cattle and thinking about an upcoming lunch with an old friend back in town. These are police procedural stories on the Border (New Mexico and Mexico). I have started with the more recent ones featuring undersheriff Estelle Guzman. This one, though, features the retired Bill Gastner as the protagonist. Itʼs lovely how much the style of writing has changed from the hard-charging, young mom to the reflective old geezer.
