When last we left them, our heroes were doomed! DOOOOMED! There predicament will be resolved in this volume of comics... but not till the end and not until we do some back story first.
Such flashes around the timeline are pretty... irritating and also cheap, in that it is usually deployed to get you to read through part of a story you have no interest in just so that you can get to the resolution you want. In this case, though it is irritating, this flashback is not cheap and adds to the eventual resolution while opening up the universe as a whole and the major conflict in it.
The strength is once again in the interactions between characters which helps with the various gut-punches in this volume. This also helps set up some small scenes like the one between Sophie and Lying Cat. Lying Cat is just awesome anyway, …
