This is the story of Jeanette, adopted and brought up by her mother as one of God's elect. Zealous and passionate, she seems destined for life as a missionary, but then she falls for one of her converts.

At sixteen, Jeanette decides to leave the church, her home and her family, for the young woman she loves.

Review of 'Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit' on 'Goodreads'

Winterson examines her painful circumstances, but doesn't rail against her abuser, the mother who betrayed a child's trust at every turn and then blamed the child for a strained relationship. I'd say that's #goals, except self examination hasn't brought me much joy so far? Or has it? ? It feels important though. And my therapist seems to think it is.
