A History of Western Philosophy

For several years this book was on my to-read list and at last, I am happy that I finished it. For someone like me who has never studied philosophy in school/college, this is a great introduction to western philosophy. Over the years I had acquired bits and pieces of information about various philosophical ideas and to see it placed in historical context and meaning is revealing. Russell clearly states his opinion about most of the philosophers and their work, while this might turn off some people who already know a lot about philosophy, for me this was very helpful. Especially his chapters about modern philosophers are very good.

I felt that what once looked formidable from a distance is now looking at least approachable after reading this book. I would recommend this to anyone seeking an introduction to western philosophy.

যদি কারো দর্শনে আগ্রহ থেকে থাকে তাহলে তার জন্য খুবই প্রয়োজনীয় বই। এমনকি আপনি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে দর্শনের বিভিন্ন শাখায় ঘোরাফেরা করে থাকেন তাহলেও এই বইটা উপকারে আসবে। কেননা, আমরা যখন পড়ি, তখন দর্শন পড়ি। দর্শনের ইতিহাস অন্যদিকে আমাদের একটা বার্ডস আই ভিউ দিতে পারে যেখান থেকে দর্শনের ক্রমবিবর্তন, একটির সাথে আরেকটির মিথষ্ক্রিয়া, এবং সমাজ ও বিশেষ করে ধর্মের সাথে আদান-প্রদান সহজে বোঝা যায়। তাছাড়া, দর্শনে আজ অব্দি বিজ্ঞান ও গণিতের মত কড়াকড়ি মান নিয়ন্ত্রণ নেই। ফলত, গত কয়েকশতকে দর্শন বেশ খানিকটা উল্টোপথেও হেঁটেছে। এন্টিকুইটিতে কেন সামাজিক আইনকে মহাজাগতিক আইন দিয়ে জাস্টিফাই করার চেষ্টা চলত, কিংবা নিৎসের মিসোজেনি আর উবারমেনশ্ আসলে তার নিজের নাজুক স্বাস্থ্যের সাথে সম্পর্কিত তা জানতে হলে আমাদের তাদের পরিবেশ-প্রতিবেশ জানাটা জরুরি। এই বইটা সে কাজে স্বার্থক বলতে হবে।

তা বাদে, রাসেল সাহেবের লেখা বরাবরই পছন্দ করি। লোকটার উইট দারুণ।
