who is marrying who...and why

short plot description: Lady Susan, recently widowed is on the lookout for a good match for herself and her daughter. Being quite selfish, intelligent, without a conscience or a sense for romance she has no qualms in manipulating those around her to reach her goals. Will love prevail in the end?

my thoughts: told entirely through letters written by the different characters we experience the plot from different angles which gives a refreshing twist to the now familiar themes of Jane Austen (though this book is thought to predate her later, more famous works). The main character Lady Susan is not the usually "nice" one (though of course those are also around) and things are quite as clear-cut as in her later works.

my recommendation: should definitely be read as a counterpoint to the more famous works of Jane Austen
