I fell in love with this book from page 1. Thankfully, the rest of it did not disappoint. A wonder of a book. Easy 5 stars.

At just over halfway through, I've given this a 4 out of 5. It's strange. It's not at all what I was expecting. That is, it's not (yet?) a typical story with a good guy and a bad guy, where everything predictably leads to a climax. It very well could, but I really have no idea what's going to happen next. It seems more like I'm watching bits and pieces of a young magician's life. I really can't explain what I think of it other than to say that I'm getting quite attached to the book and don't want it to end yet!

EDIT: I've finished the book. I'm happy with giving it 4 stars. It would have been 5 if I actually liked the main character (he was a one-dimensional drama queen). The story itself was extremely readable and full of surprises.

EDIT 2: I was wrong to take …

Jeffery Deaver: The devil's teardrop (1999, Simon & Schuster)

Review of "The devil's teardrop" on 'Goodreads'

I absolutely love the story idea behind this book, but I just couldn't get through it. Why?

The writing style. He used short phrases. Bits and pieces. Not whole sentences. Added suspense? No. Not at all. It was annoying.

Imagine that for hundreds of pages. No thanks! If you can get past that (or maybe listen to the audiobook), I think it could make for a really interesting book. It's just not my thing, though.

Karl Pilkington: An idiot abroad (2011, Canongate)

Review of 'An idiot abroad' on 'Goodreads'

I really enjoyed watching the TV show, but having watched it, there was really no reason to read the book. It was like reading a really long blog. If you're a huge fan, you might enjoy it.

This was a hard one to review. The first 250 pages were really hard to get through, but I knew from reading reviews that the book is fantastic and the ending would be great. I give this part of the book 1 star. The final 100 or so pages, however, would be rated 4 stars - it would be a full 5 if it wasn't for a handful of sections of droning, over-the-top detail which broke up otherwise unbeatable action sequences. So, overall, a solid 3 stars. I think that the rest of the books in the series might be more enjoyable since a lot of the explanations have already occurred in this book.

I can't wait to see HBO's take on this. Hopefully it's as good as the first book / TV series translation. This is the most interesting book series I've read in a long time (ever? probably!).

I watched the HBO series before reading the book. Actually, I loved the series so much that I couldn't wait for season 2, so I decided to dive into the books. The author has an amazing way with words. He doesn't fall into the trap of trying to impress people with his words, though, like a slew of authors I've seen here on Goodreads who will go unnamed. :) The book is huge, at about 750 pages, but absolutely worth every minute. I won't go into too much detail, as it's literally been done hundreds of times due to the book's popularity. I will say that this book (and, hopefully, the whole series) is very special and will surely become an enduring classic.
