Alex Garland: The Beach (Paperback, 1998, Riverhead Trade)

Review of 'The Beach' on 'Goodreads'

For a long time, even after I started it, I didn't know what to expect of this book. It turned out to be a great adventure, and yet entirely plausible.

Right from the start, as with "A simple plan", you know that this book is not going to end well. And, spoiler alert: it doesn't. It is well written and hard to put down. However, by the time you figure out who the bad guy is, the bad guy only keeps getting badder. This book offers no relief of any kind.

André Arnaud: Pierres de sang (Paperback, French language, 1999, Fayard)

Review of 'Pierres de sang' on 'Goodreads'

Not bad, but uses long-winded and rather formal dialogue (even for French), sounding fake and unnatural. Tedious explanatory scene at the end with no action at all, just coppers sitting down and talking, described in the book itself as "trois heures de martyre", and we, as readers, can only agree.

Esther Verhoef: Lieve mama (Paperback, 2015, Prometheus)

Review of 'Lieve mama' on 'Goodreads'

Heel vlot geschreven, ruim gebruik makend van cliffhangers, met een climax tot en met het eind. Plausibele situaties en karakters. En die "lieve mama" is een vondst.
