OK, I'm starting to notice some parallels between Control and the biologist. Both don't use their real names after coming to that place. The biologist struggled to connect to her husband and Control with his mother, both of whom have gone to some unreachable place that both want to go to. Their minds are "colonized by the environment", Control in the human Southern Reach, a place of stagnation and decay --- the biologist in area X, an unhuman place in constant change.

She felt like she was drowning when she came close to the Crawler didn't she? Maybe that's when she got cloned?

Also, the imagery used here seems to suggest that she is light and Control is shadow.

I feel like there's a lot of themes in here that I don't know what to do with. There seems to be some sort of environmentalism going on. Maybe it's some form of reversal going on, instead of humans colonizing nature it's the environment that's colonizing humans.

Something about Area X is making the biologist more of herself, exploring the environment like she did with the pond. It's like she is lamenting the whole book that she didn't get closer to her husband, but then in the end she realizes she is still called more to the ecosystems.
