Despite being a book about a woman and told almost entirely from the female characters' points of view, all the women in the book are side characters. Their only significance (even to themselves) is through men.

I wonder whether the hits harder today than when it was first published. How much of what we see as disturbing, such as the women seeing their only purpose in life as a wife, was seen as trivial details by the original readers?
