Not gonna lie, I spent most of this book thinking this series might be a miss for me, no matter how highly praised it's been. But those last ten chapters turned me completely around, and now I'm 100% on board.

Patton Oswalt: Zombie spaceship wasteland (2011, Scribner)

Review of 'Zombie spaceship wasteland' on 'Goodreads'

This was a surprisingly sober insight into a facet of Patton Oswalt's personality and past, and I don't really know how to criticize or judge autobiographical work, except on the basis of how well I feel I understood what the author seemed to be trying to say. I think I grasped it fairly well, and particularly appreciated chapters like "On A Street In New Orleans" and "Ticket Booth", which feel strangely raw and revealing.

I enjoyed the hell out of this book. I quite enjoy saying that a book was unlike any other book I've read, and it never gets old, and this was one such.

Dan Simmons: The Terror (Hardcover, 2007, Little, Brown and Company)

The bestselling author of Ilium transforms the story of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition into a …

The last 10% of this harrowing novel feels nothing at all like the rest. Nothing. My first reaction was disappointment, as I'd been comfortable with the rise and flow of the words, and this last bit felt like it was written by a different author -- tacked to the end of an Arctic journey it didn't match like some belated MadLibs.

It wasn't until I started writing this review that the ending finally clicked for me: the ending is so vastly different than the rest of the book because it represents a massive perspective change for the narrator. Whether this works for a reader, I suppose, would depend on how consistent you like the tone of your narrative. I found the transition jarring, but I can now appreciate narratively why that was done.

Peter Clines: Paradox Bound: A Novel (2017, Crown)

Eli’s willing to admit it: he’s a little obsessed with the mysterious woman he met …

Review of 'Paradox Bound: A Novel' on 'Goodreads'

This was a slightly frustrating mythos for me. The original notion of the founding of the American Dream bothers me, and while I enjoyed the interweaving causality threads (and the geeky references), there were a few hanging plot points that I wish had been better resolved (or resolved at all, in the case of the 300-year cap). All told, pretty fun, but just frustrating enough to drop it to 4 stars.

This was delightful, and everything I've come to expect from Gaiman. A must-have for the home library.

This was an interesting finish to the series. I won't spoil it, but the resolution wasn't the one book 2 led me to think I'd get. It was refreshingly... well, humble isn't the right word, but I can't think of a better one.

Larry Niven: The Ringworld Engineers (Ringworld, #2) (Paperback, 1997, Del Rey)

I'll admit, I got a bit lost in the numbers at times, but a good story overall.

C. S. Lewis: The Screwtape Letters (2013)

The Screwtape Letters is a Christian apologetic novel by C. S. Lewis and dedicated to …

Review of 'The Screwtape letters' on 'Goodreads'

As Lewis himself pointed out, this collection of letters is, at best, incomplete; without a concurrent correspondence between an archangel and a subordinate guardian angel, this work is really only half done. That aside, I only have my own distracted nature to blame not enjoying the book more. I found large swaths of it tedious, even as I was impressed and amused by others.

Taken as a whole, this was excellent.
