Stopped Reading

Kim Michele Richardson: The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek (AudiobookFormat, 2019, Blackstone Publishing, Blackstone Audio) No rating

I really enjoyed this. I nearly put it down because of the sexual violence early on (not necessarily badly written, not gratuitous, not explicit, and in general, relevant to the story, but more than I wanted to handle), but I kept on and I’m glad I did.

Feeling mixed on this one. Rather a lot of on-page rape and attempted rape, and that’s not something I usually am willing to read. But it was a gift and I’m pushing through a bit to see if it gets better. (In many ways, it’s good, but I don’t want to read about rape, it’s too upsetting right now)

Review of 'Fifth Avenue Story Society' on 'Goodreads'

Few things are more annoying in a book than a surprise evangelical motive. It's fine to write a Christian novel, but please label it more obviously as such so I don't waste my time.

The story hums along interestingly, with broken, compelling characters, until one page, suddenly, one character talks about how Jesus saved her. And then, the rest of the book, the narrator continues with an obvious opinion of the "Truth" of Jesus. And of course, everyone ends up happily ever after because of Jesus and going to church. I wouldn't mind so much if it had been obvious from the beginning but don't waste my time. Seriously obnoxious and preachy and evangelical.
