I had a hard time deciding on whether to recommend this book or not; much of it FEELS like a first novel in a series, and so has trouble finding the voice appropriate for it. But there were too many bits of the novel that had me seriously grinning or laughing, so I can't write it off either. (Particular shout-outs to the explanations of magic in the series, well done.) So there're my caveats: if you have the patience to overlook some structural problems, and are looking for a new urban fantasy series, then have at. I'll pick up the next in the series to see if he smooths it along.
