Review of 'The Help' on 'Goodreads'

5 stars

The Help is known for portraying the lives of African American maids in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s. But there is so much more to The Help. The plot, subplots, and writing are tremendously absorbing. The characters are original, unique, and realistic. The Help is so lifelike that, while reading it, I sometimes forgot that the story and characters are fictional.
I learned a lot about the culture of the 1960s in the South. I was shocked at how racist so many people were. Also, so many mothers did not know how to raise their children and instead had “the help” raise their children. The Help proved to me over and over again that historical fiction doesn’t have to be boring and only be about the history. It can have a beautiful story, unique characters, and fascinating historical and cultural aspects.
