Roy Adkins, Lesley Adkins: Jane Austen's England (2014, Penguin Publishing Group) 4 stars

A serious work of history about the world of Jane Austen

5 stars

This is an excellent book. It is full of day-to-day details drawn from first-hand sources. The authors are outstanding writers, and present a lot of information in a very readable way. Just be prepared —- if you have rosy views of this era, the authors will dash them.

Ian Mortimer: The time traveler's guide to Elizabethan England (2012) 5 stars

A well-researched and accessible history

5 stars

Ian Mortimer strikes a great balance between serious history and accessibility. His style of writing, while not “light”, is still very pleasurable to read. This book gives a lot of details about the daily lives of people from the Elizabethan time. He tries to show people in the past as real people instead characters in story.
