Richard Morgan: The Steel Remains (Gollancz) (2009, Gollancz) 4 stars

Review of 'The Steel Remains (Gollancz)' on 'Goodreads'

4 stars

This was marketed as a piece of subversive fantasy when it came out. I don't think it's exactly that but Morgan certainly brought his brutal observational humour to an entertaining fantasy setting and creates a compelling tale with likeable and real characters. The second act drooped a bit with what felt like an unnecessarily long march through an alternative reality, but the third act came back with an eviscerative bang, and the prologue sets us up nicely, wanting a big dollop of more.
