War is hell. And this book does a great job showing how that hell manifests itself on a city block in Berlin in the middle of WWII. There were times I struggled to fill in the gaps that Gillham left (in fairness, the gaps were deliberate) -- but that ultimately reinforced the feeling that in times of war, little is certain, motives are suspect, and people aren't necessarily predictable or rational.
