A phenomenally entertaining tale of drug running gone wrong. Stone is a great writer and really filled out the plot making it not your average action story. Reminded me quite a bit of Cormac McCarthy’s no country for old men. The final chapters are really amazing and Stone is truly great writer. I’m anxious to read more about him and look into his poetry. Vietnam, cults, new age philosophy, Zen Buddhism, drug running, shady drug enforcement agents, journalism… What’s not to like?

Review of "Spirit Run: A 6,000-Mile Marathon Through North America's Stolen Land" on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
Really will written and inspiring brief memoir of a run from Alaska to Guatemala with an indigenous initiative to connect Native American communities through a spirit run. I will definitely keep an eye out for anything that Noe Alvarez publishes in the future. Well written and sparse prose. Very inspiring and insightful and highly recommended.

Brendan reviewed Despite Everything by Aaron Cometbus
Review of 'Despite Everything' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
Ever since I first picked up a cometbus in high school Aaron has been one of my favorite writers. This is a perfect summation of the punk I love and the lifestyle. He does the perfect job of adding sentimentality and making it relatable. I often think that if I were to sum up my worldview you need to read this and listen to fugazi a lot, although the two are quite dissimilar.

Brendan reviewed What Uncle Sam really wants by Noam Chomsky (The Real story series)
Review of 'What Uncle Sam really wants' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
This is the first Chomsky book I remember reading. He is an indomitable spirit and absolutely essential to understanding the modern world. This book had a huge impression on me but I think anyone can pick up any of the dozens of books he has written on foreign policy in the United States and have their mind blown. Everyone needs to read at least one.
Brendan reviewed Ham on rye by Charles Bukowski
Review of 'Ham on rye' on 'Goodreads'

I read more Bukowski than I care to admit in my 20s. I’m retrospect, as a far kinder and more compassionate person in my 40s This is the only book worth reading by him.
Brendan reviewed The Teachings by Daniel Quinn
Review of 'The Teachings' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
I recently reread this book in conjunction with reading Dawn of everything. It held up remarkably well and echoed many of the ideas present in that book based on social science. I gave it to my 13-year-old son for Christmas because I thought it was such a huge part of my intellectual development. I honestly can’t say enough about it and think it’s a classic. The other books in the series are good as well.
Brendan reviewed Superiority Burger cookbook by Brooks Headley
Review of 'Superiority Burger cookbook' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
An awesome vegan cookbook by one of my favorite hard-core drummers. Brooks absolutely killed it in born against, the monorchid, and Universal order of Armageddon. Awesome and inventive recipes. Everything I’ve tried has been great though I will say that making the actual burger is quite the undertaking. It’s fun but not something I’m going to do again. The vegan mayo is really good (coming from someone who HATES mayonnaise) and the other condiment recipes are great.
