I read Babel and then got into an argument on mastodon with someone who thought I was talking about these and it was excusing genocide. They eventually figured out we were speaking of different books by the same author but I am very curious to hear whether they were indeed right about this one.

Notably, I'm about 10% into it, and the main character is witnessing a classroom discussion about the genocide of a small island nation, and ruminating to herself whether or not her own country was complicit in that genocide, which was known to be committed by that country's enemy, given that the massacre precipitated the entrance into the war of a third party, which benefited her country.
