Welcome to The Sunbearer Trials, where ten semidioses compete in a series of challenges with the highest of stakes in this breathtaking, Mexican-inspired fantasy from Aiden Thomas, the author of the New York Times-bestselling Cemetery Boys.

Only the most powerful and honorable will be chosen.

Teo, the seventeen-year-old trans son of the goddess of birds, isn’t worried. As a Jade, it’s unlikely he’ll be chosen to compete in the Trials, and even if his best friend Niya competes, she’s a born-and-bred Gold semidiós with unparalleled abilities.

But for the first time in over a century, Sol chooses not one, but two Jade competitors: Teo – and Xio, the thirteen-year-old child of the god of bad luck. With the odds stacked against them, Teo is determined to get himself and his friends through the trials unscathed – for fame, glory, and their own survival...

Ok, I love Aiden Thomas.

Disclaimer: This is a YA book, so I did not judge it harshly in an attempt to compare it to adult book expectations.

This book was like taking The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, and Mexican culture and throwing it all into the blender. I really enjoyed a mythology book that was not centered around Greek mythology. Thomas is also amazing at incorporating diversity into his books, and this one had it in spades. A semidiós is deaf and even the bad guys have enough knowledge of sign language to be able to tell what's being said. LGBTQ+ representation is shown through the entirety of the book. Teo, the MC, is trans and still struggles with accepting himself because his feathers are still the feminine brown colors. The overall acceptance of the characters choosing to be themselves and receiving full support of everyone -even the mortals- was amazing.

I really loved …

A combination of the Hunger Games and Mexican mythology

A world where, every decade, it is up to ten of the gods' children (Golds and Jades) to save the world from the Obsidians by competing against each other in The Sunbearer Trials: the winner will be selected as the Sunbearer, the loser will be sacrificed in order to save the world.

An epic competion that reminded me strongly of the Hunger Games, but had its own twists and rules. A coming of age story about underdog teenage Teo and his struggles to prove himself to others and himself, too. I really liked the story, the setting, and the characters, although most of them have some potential to evolve even more.

It is a young adults book, so I was sometimes bored or frustrated with elaborate teenage struggles and stubbornness, but overall I enjoyed the book.
