A cute introduction to fantasy for burgeoning world-building enthusiasts. A simple enough story it is too freakin adorable not to love. LGBTQ kids lit is the hope I needed to take in right now - the world certainly still looks to be burning, but somewhere there is a kid that is being raised to respect people of all sexualities and genders.
That said, as an American I felt like perhaps her darker skinned characters needed hair that was kinkier... But seeing that she is from NZ I think I can see where she is coming from. IDK
Even if it is "just for kids" I would recommend this to anyone who has been jonzing for more Castle Waiting.
