Pros: The author actually gets Russian mythology right. As a Russian, I know what I'm talking about
Cons:
The story becomes a story well into the 3/4 of the book - before that, it is a cringe-including tale of family drama/abuse that adds nothing and could be told in the first few opening pages
The main character is extremely unlikable, thinking mostly about getting laid, and, for all his self-professed intelligence, shows remarkable inability of get himself out of trouble.
Very odd notions about gender. I have expected better of Mercedes Lackey of all people. Men think of nothing but getting laid and women are all shallow gold diggers unless they are either old or magical creatures
