I already suspected Val McDermid was brilliant (St. Hilda's - Oxford, University Challenge Christmas 2016), but one can be brilliant yet boring, or brilliant and not one's thing. Out of curiosity I borrowed [b:Out of Bounds|29101612|Out of Bounds (Inspector Karen Pirie, #4)|Val McDermid|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1459805676s/29101612.jpg|49339546] and, highly unusual for me as far as police procedurals go, read (most of) it in one sitting, forgoing a Python manual due to be returned that day, ignoring the first day of 2017 it was above 22 degrees Celsius and sunny.
DCI Karen Pirie doesn't always get what she wants immediately, her trust is occasionally misplaced, she gets yelled at for circumstances beyond her control but doesn't crumple or rage back. I learned some Scottish pejoratives, I especially like DCI Pirie's ability to remain tactful when stressed and ability to stifle herself, I liked encountering a new-to-me character when she's coping with grief.
