Review of 'Black Canary And Zatanna Bloodspell' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
Yet another delightful random library discovery! Looking at just the cover I knew immediately I had to read this book - no matter how many other library books I have to read already. And besides a bit too much T&A I felt like this comic really delivered. Despite the fact that I can't quite rate it 5/5 stars, I'm still seriously considering running out and buying it right now...
The first thing you should know about this book is that it's anything but serious. Breaking from the grimdark cliche of DC, this comic is a fun buddy cop, girl's night out style shenanigans strip. Refreshingly stand alone, we get to see two ladies just hanging out, being friends, and saving the day! With a small dash of Dinah/Ollie what more can a girl ask for?

Well... As I mentioned in my intro, I did feel like there was a bit more fan service going on then I would necessarily all out endorse. But honestly I think this is one case where I mostly just have to get over myself. There's no denying that Black Canary can look sexy and kick butt while doing so. I really enjoyed the character arc we got to go on with Zatanna and I thought the dialog was very well written.
To conclude I just wanted to touch briefly on the art style. While I wasn't too keen on it at first, the style did grow on me. I definitely think it fit the tone of the story perfectly. That said, I can understand why some people didn't like it. But I did take issue with those who went so far as to say it's actually bad.
Even if you don't appreciate the style we have to all admit that the book was obviously done by someone who knew what they were doing. Not only is everyone proportioned properly, but each frame is finished consistently well. Backgrounds aren't just ignored and the details are anything but sloppy.
