This graphic novel is set in an unspecified country in eastern Europe, around the year 1900. The story follows one day in the life of Mendelman, an artisan, as he visits the nearest town on market day to sell his rugs. However, times are changing, and demand for his and other fellow artisan's high-quality ware has disappeared with the arrival of cheaper, mass produced items.

An extremely emotive graphic novel, Sturm skillfully communicates all the things that are hardest to do. While there is certainly a plot line, fairly simple and straight forward, the main force of the novel comes through in the emotional landscape that Mendleman is experiencing. Without this great emotional depth I assume that the plot line would likely come across as rather trite, but overall things balance out extremely well.
