I'm just getting back into comics after a long hiatus, and I'm also migrating from Marvel to DC. That being the case, I think I could have chosen a better first foray into The New 52. This volume was lent to me, and I hadn't previously read any of its antecedents. I also didn't read any of the tie-in comics.
The most jarring surprise for me was the "family" aspect. It should have been obvious from the title, I know. I was vaguely aware that, before The New 52, there had been a succession of Robins over the years. However, I was shocked to discover just how many of them are still around in the new continuity. I had a bigger problem with the implausibility of Joker's actions. I get that he's a big deal and all, but I'd like at least some idea of how he pulled any of that off. Further, while Joker is touted as being crazy and unpredictable, his actions seem pretty tried and true to me. Go after hero's loved ones, ensnare hero in diabolical trap, let hero get the upper hand while monologuing. The only thing different here is the gruesome facelessness, and that doesn't really carry the story.
Anyway, I still enjoyed it. The art really draws you in, as one might expect from a story like this. I should probably read all the tie-ins and see if that makes a difference.
