The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. Review of 'Life of Pi' on 'Goodreads'

"Life of Pi is a masterful and utterly original novel that is at once the story of a young castaway who faces immeasurable hardships on the high seas, and a meditation on religion, faith, art and life that is as witty as it is profound." That's a pretty tall order to fill, Mr. Book-Synopsis. And, of course, the book itself does not shy away from raising expectations. Within the first few pages, we are told that Pi's story will "make us believe in God" (not to be confused with "prove God exists") and the end of the first part says, "this story has a happy ending" as if to assure the reader that, even though the narrative will be harsh and cruel we can rest assured that every thing turns out all right.

How does it fare in meeting these promises? In my opining, it does not. It relies on …
