Anne McCaffrey: Dragonflight (Paperback, 1991, Eclipse Books) 4 stars

HOW CAN ONE GIRL SAVE AN ENTIRE WORLD?To the nobles who live in Benden Weyr, …

Currently was in the mood for a reread of the first Dragonriders of Pern book by Anne McCaffrey.

While I'm enjoying it, I always forget how much misogyny is in this world building. Maybe that was typical of feudal fantasy stories, especially given this was written in the sixties, but I find it very tedious now.

I do like her fantasy having the touches of sci-fi that it does particularly the backstory in the prologue and the teleportation.

@VKNask yeah, it's funny to me how different some rereads feel; between me changing over time and also misremembering details, sometimes I come back to something again and am really surprised by what I notice.

I've never read these books! Is this one you've reread a bunch?

@picklish not tons but a handful of times. My dad loaned it to me as a kid, first try couldn't get into it, maybe was too young, then really liked it and started scouring used bookstores for other McCaffrey books. As an adult read it a couple years ago, felt similarly but had already forgotten or was extra sensitive to it this time but had been in the mood for a dragon book.

It's a really fast read and only like 290 pages so I'd be curious what you thought of it if you want to give it a try. You can see the influence it may have had on more recent media, and there's some common sci-fi tropes as well, would be curious how similar it is to other things you've read.
