Have loved reading for as long as I can remember. Fantasy (epic and urban) and sci-fi books are my true loves. Actively working to decolonize my bookshelf.

Courtney Milan: The Duchess War

Review of 'The Duchess War' on 'Goodreads'

I liked this one a lot better than the prequel. I'm a sucker for historical romance, and this scratched that itch. They weren't the most brilliantly sketched characters, but it was definitely an enjoyable read :)

I'm so glad that storyline is done.

Pavel Young got far too much time for an entitled little shit. David Webber is capable of so much better writing. I recognize this book series is older, so I'm giving it a little more credit than I would something written recently.

But uuugh. I am loving it, but I also rushed through this book because I was so over the plotline. Looking forward to more of the series without that rapist prick.

Not the strongest. I really could have done without so much "insight" into how the rapist mind thinks. It's not groundbreaking, or new. It's boring.

Honestly, that whole storyline really detracts from the overall story for me. And I hope it ends quickly.

Review of 'Iced' on 'Goodreads'

I don't think I've ever finished a book I disliked as much as this one.

Firstly, Dani's narrative was so jarring and off-putting that I read the entire book at arm's length. I skimmed, read as fast as possible, because according to the brief research I'd done it was important to know the details of this book before continuing with the series. But ewwww do I wish I had just found myself some spoilers online and skipped it entirely.

I recognize that Dani is young. But either Moning cannot convincingly write young people, or Dani was meant to be so obnoxious I wanted to punch the book every time I turned the page. If the latter is the case, Moning is brilliant, because that was exactly my reaction. The ego and arrogance would have been better as a starting point. But there was absolutely zero character growth.

Oh, it was …

Totally enjoyed this book too. I'm beyond sad that the story will end after the next book. The characters are fun and I'm totally digging the main character.

Review of 'Fire Study (Study, Book 3)' on 'Goodreads'

I think this is one of my most frustrating and favorite books. Yelena is a great character who grows and makes mistakes and learns from them. She does what needs to be done. The romance between her and Valek does not overshadow the rest of the book and it does not overshadow her decisions. Such a contrast from most YA books nowadays.

Ari and Janco could have had a bigger part in this story, only because I really do love them! And a part of me still wishes for a book 4 where the Commander's story could be more fully explored.

That said this book is an excellent conclusion to the series. And if you can make it through the parts where Everything Goes Wrong, and then that part where It Goes More Wrong, it's worth the read.

Emma Jane Holloway: A Study in Silks (Paperback, 2013, Del Rey)

Review of 'A Study in Silks' on 'Goodreads'

I really enjoyed this book. It was exactly what I wanted it to be. Wonderful mix of steampunk, romance, mystery, and fantasy.

It's not a great stand-a-lone, which is fine because it's in a trilogy and they're all released lol. Final judgement of the book will really depend on how things wind up. But definitely worth the read imho.
