2.5 stars. I liked this book sometimes. Paks is a very compelling character, and her story is interesting. Unfortunately, the long stretches of march in which nothing happens except a changing description of the geography Paks marches through are very boring.
Admittedly, a lot of this marching contains incredible amounts of detail of the day to day life of an infantry soldier, detail many books leave out. Early on, I found the exploration of the effect of mud on marching foot soldiers very interesting. There was just too much of that sort of description and the book slowed down too much at these points.
