Review of 'Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass & Sorcery' on 'Goodreads'
2 stars
So, I really wanted to enjoy this comic BUT...
1. Potentially interesting characters but no plot and little character development.
2. Men and women are treated anything but equal.
2A. No sexy pinup style guys!
3. Fell short in the wit department and ended up only highly dependent on trope and cliche.
But maybe this is only internalized misogyny attempting to rear it's ugly head? Well, I certainly don't agree with any of the reviewers who simply say that "woman don't act like this" or that "this is an insult to women". We didn't ask to be on your F** pedestal and yes, the idea of equality is that women get to act any way they want. Just like guys do.
I think the real issue is that I read/watch too many of these sorts of stories. This is not the best the genre has to offer. Go watch The Guild or something by Zombie Orpheus. There's also lots of webcomics dealing with D&D and wit, although I haven't read them in a very long time and don't recall how feminist friendly they are.
As far as the empowered female characters go, despite their intriguing characters I couldn't help but feel that each gender was cut from basically the same cloth. Main female characters = crazy/awesome/up for anything/party girls and main male characters= silent/deadly/voice of reason. Obviously there are was some diversity and maybe I'm focusing in too much on certain characters. Would have liked to see more sexy guys.
So, overall, while this was a step in "the right direction" it didn't live up to its potential.
