Who are the Rat Queens?

A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they're in the business of killing all god's creatures for profit.

It's also a darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief. This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!

How you feel about this will depend on how invested you are in fantasy RPGs, like Dungeons & Dragons.

In fact, it reads like a goofy campaign that was certainly loads of fun for the players to play and reminence over...But doesn't matter to anyone else.

I guess there are "inverted tropes", but... yawn such a story technique is neither, on its own, creative or grabbing.

The bizarre humor does hit the mark enough times and this collection ends with a cliffhanger to bait you into believing that a more sinister plot is on the horizon.

1. Potentially interesting characters but no plot and little character development.
2. Men and women are treated anything but equal.
2A. No sexy pinup style guys!
3. Fell short in the wit department and ended up only highly dependent on trope and cliche.

But maybe this is only internalized misogyny attempting to rear it's ugly head? Well, I certainly don't agree with any of the reviewers who simply say that "woman don't act like this" or that "this is an insult to women". We didn't ask to be on your F** pedestal and yes, the idea of equality is that women get to act any way they want. Just like guys do.

I think the real issue is that I read/watch too many of these sorts of stories. This is not the best the genre has to offer. Go …
