Brian Merchant: Blood in the Machine (Hardcover, 2023, Little Brown & Company)

The true story of what happened the first time machines came for human jobs, when …

They were described by the authorities as “rioters” or “depredators,” or even as terrorists. But if that were the case, why were so many of their actions accompanied by cheers from the crowds who looked on as a factory was raided or a machine was smashed?

@sam Oh! Thank you for this!

Years ago I read the novel _The Rape of the Rose_ by Glyn Hughes, and that was the last time I used the word "Luddite" as a slur. There's so much nonfiction on my reading list and I have so little brain capacity for it, but _Blood in the Machine_ is going to or near the top.

@sam I'm reading this now and really enjoying it, especially with the parallels the author makes to the "tech titans" of our current times.

Loved that bit by David Graeber, where he mentioned how the very notion of having to obey strict, excessively long work hours itself probably fueled more outrage than just mere efficiency by using machinery. Prior to that, the Sun rose, you got up and about your business. The protests still got framed as utter stupidity against inevitable progress ever since. Whished I could interview the poor workers from the dark ages of early industrialisation about their Corp. "benefits"... 😇
